AACSR – Aluminium Alloy Conductor Steel Reinforced

AACSR conductor places aluminium-alloy wires around a steel reinforcing core. It is considered where a project needs more mechanical capability than an all-alloy conductor can provide and where the alloy outer layers are preferred to conventional hard-drawn aluminium. The alloy grade, steel-core design and applicable standard must be specified together.

Product Overview

AACSR is a composite conductor in which aluminium-alloy outer wires provide the main conductive section and also contribute mechanical strength, while the steel core supplies additional reinforcement. This differs from AAAC, which has no steel core, and from conventional ACSR, which uses hard-drawn aluminium outer wires.

The material combination does not guarantee that every AACSR has the same strength or conductivity. Actual performance follows the selected alloy, aluminium-to-steel area ratio, core coating, strand construction and standard table. These details also determine sag-tension calculations and fitting selection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would a project choose AACSR instead of AAAC?

AACSR adds a steel reinforcing core to the aluminium-alloy outer section. It may be considered when an all-alloy AAAC design cannot meet the required tensile, span or loading conditions.

AACSR uses aluminium-alloy outer wires, whereas conventional ACSR uses hard-drawn aluminium. The different wire materials change the strength-conductivity balance and require their own construction data.

Identify the aluminium-alloy designation and temper, steel-core type and coating, strand counts and wire diameters, metallic areas, finished diameter, mass, resistance and rated strength.

No. Breaking load is only one input. Electrical resistance, sag, creep, temperature, mass, diameter, clearances, wind and ice response and hardware compatibility must also be assessed.

Provide existing or proposed clamp, dead-end and joint details, including bore sizes and compression systems. This helps determine whether new fittings or installation tooling are required.

Use an approved conductor data sheet linked to the purchase specification. Engineering review should confirm the standard, materials, dimensions, mechanical and electrical values, tests, drum schedule and fittings.
