Overhead Insulated Cables
What Are Overhead Insulated Cables?
Overhead insulated cables are conductors with polymeric insulation or a protective covering, designed for distribution and service circuits installed on poles or other overhead supports. The category includes aerial bundled cable assemblies, in which insulated cores are grouped into one compact circuit, and covered conductors used as part of an engineered overhead-line system. A covered conductor is not automatically a touch-safe cable; electrical clearances and operating practices remain governed by the applicable line design and standard. These products are used on low- and medium-voltage overhead networks where utilities need insulated phase separation, a compact route, organised multi-core construction or additional protection against incidental contact. Typical projects include public distribution, service connections, street-lighting circuits, vegetation-exposed routes and network-renewal schemes. The selected cable must still be coordinated with span, support method, fittings, earthing, environmental exposure and installation practice. Our overhead insulated cable range covers LV aerial bundled cable, MV aerial bundled cable, duplex, triplex and quadruplex service drop cable, NF2X and NFA2X families, and covered-conductor systems such as BS EN 50397 conductors, CCT, tree wire and spacer cable. These products represent different voltage classes and mechanical support concepts, so they should be compared as separate system families rather than as interchangeable cable names. How to Select an Overhead Insulated Cable
Selection starts with the network voltage and line architecture, then considers whether the circuit is self-supporting or messenger-supported, whether screening or a protective covering is required, and how the cable will interface with poles, clamps, connectors and terminations. The comparison below helps identify the appropriate product route before detailed cable sizing.| Product route | Main construction | Typical project objective |
| LV ABC and service drop | Individually insulated aluminium phase cores in a self-supporting bundle or around a designated neutral messenger. Service-drop variants use duplex, triplex or quadruplex core arrangements. | Low-voltage pole-line distribution, customer service connections and public-lighting circuits where a compact insulated assembly is required. |
| MV aerial bundled cable | Three insulated medium-voltage phase cores assembled around a dedicated support conductor, with the screen system and earthing arrangement defined by the selected design. | Compact medium-voltage overhead feeders where the complete electrical, mechanical, termination and support system is engineered together. |
| Covered-conductor systems | AAC, AAAC, ACSR or alloy conductors with XLPE, HDPE or another specified polymeric covering; includes conventional covered line wire and conductors used in tree-wire or spacer-cable systems. | Overhead distribution routes where additional protection against incidental phase, vegetation or earthed-object contact is required while retaining an overhead-conductor design. |
Applications of Overhead Insulated Cables
Overhead insulated cable systems support distribution projects with different voltage levels, route constraints and mechanical arrangements. The product family is selected according to the function of the circuit and the complete overhead support system.LV distribution and service connections
LV ABC and service-drop assemblies are used for pole-to-pole distribution, residential or commercial service connections and street-lighting circuits, with the core formula and support arrangement matched to the network.Compact MV overhead distribution
MV ABC provides a bundled medium-voltage circuit for utility or industrial feeders where route width, phase organisation and coordinated mechanical support are important design considerations.Vegetation-exposed and constrained corridors
Covered conductors, tree wire and spacer-cable systems can reduce the likelihood of faults caused by brief contact with branches, adjacent phases or earthed objects when applied with the required clearances and hardware.Network renewal and reliability upgrades
Overhead insulated systems can support the replacement or reinforcement of existing distribution routes where the project requires a different support concept, improved phase separation or a more compact circuit arrangement.Standards for Overhead Insulated Cables
BS 7870-5, HD 626 S1, NF C 33-209 and AS/NZS 3560.1 - cover applicable LV aerial bundled cable constructions, including different self-supporting and neutral-messenger arrangements. ANSI/ICEA S-76-474 - applies to specified 600 V neutral-supported service-drop assemblies used with the relevant ASTM conductor requirements. AS/NZS 3599 series - covers specified medium-voltage aerial bundled cable systems; the applicable part, screen arrangement and edition must match the project specification. BS EN 50397-1 - covers polymer-covered overhead conductors above 1 kV and up to 36 kV; these products remain covered conductors rather than touch-safe fully insulated cables. AS/NZS 3675 - covers specified covered conductors for overhead distribution systems, including CCT constructions within the applicable voltage and material scope.
