GSW Galvanised Steel Ground Wire & Steel Strand

Galvanised steel wire strand is manufactured from concentrically stranded zinc-coated steel wires to provide high mechanical strength for specified overhead ground-wire, guying, messenger, span-wire and structural support applications. AMPO supplies multiple wire constructions, tensile-strength grades and zinc-coating classes to BS 183 and ASTM A475, with project-specific lengths, packaging and inspection requirements available.

Key Advantages

  • Two overhead-line roles: Project-approved ground-wire duty or guy, messenger, span-wire and structural support.
  • Strength and corrosion options: Select the required strand construction, tensile-strength grade and zinc-coating class.
  • Project-ready supply: Specify unit length, drum or coil, identification, certificates and inspection requirements.

Product Overview

GSW is a concentrically stranded zinc-coated steel product designed primarily for mechanical strength. In overhead-line projects it can perform two functions: as a ground or shield wire above the phase conductors when accepted by the governing line specification, or as a guy, stay, messenger or span wire that supports line structures and associated equipment.

It is not an energised phase conductor. For ground-wire projects, confirm lightning shielding, fault-current duty, earthing, span, tension, corrosion exposure and fittings. For support duty, confirm working load, safety factor, strength grade, coating and termination. Because BS 183 and ASTM A475 use different construction and grade systems, nominal sizes are not automatically interchangeable.

Key Features

  • Concentrically stranded steel wires provide the tensile capacity required for line support and specified ground-wire duties.
  • Minimum breaking load changes with the selected wire count, wire diameter and strength grade; finished diameter alone does not define capacity.
  • Zinc coating protects the steel surface, while the required coating class should be matched to the service environment and project specification.
  • BS 183 and ASTM A475 constructions are presented separately so buyers can compare dimensions, mass and minimum breaking load without assuming equivalence.

Product Applications

  • Overhead ground or shield wire for transmission and distribution lines where the project specification accepts zinc-coated steel strand
  • Guy and stay wires for poles, towers and other overhead-line structures
  • Messenger, span-wire and structural support duties for utility cables and line equipment

From Production to Delivery

From raw material preparation to final shipmen, every stage is caretuly controled to ensure consistent conductor quality, reliable pertormance, and sae delivery. Our roduction,
inspection, packaging, and logistics processes are managed in accordance with applicable standards and project requirements.

Overhead conductor being wound onto a cable drum during production

Production

Steel wires are drawn to the specified size, zinc-coated and concentrically stranded to the approved wire count and lay.

Cable and conductor quality inspection and testing

Inspection

Inspection follows the purchase specification and may cover wire and strand dimensions, lay, surface condition, zinc-coating requirements, minimum breaking load, elongation and ductility. Ground-wire projects may add specified electrical or witnessed tests.

Packaged cable drums stored in the factory warehouse

Packaging

Coil or drum type, unit length, protective wrapping and identification are agreed before production to suit handling and installation.

Wooden cable drums secured inside a shipping container

Shipping

Each shipping unit is identified by standard, construction, grade, coating class, length and production lot for traceability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can BS 183 and ASTM A475 strands be treated as equivalent?

No. The standards use different construction tables, grade names, dimensions and acceptance requirements. Select the governing standard first, then match the exact wire count, wire diameter, strength grade, coating class and fittings.

State both independently. Strength grade controls the required minimum breaking load, while the coating class defines the zinc-coating requirement. Neither should be inferred from strand diameter or application alone.

Yes, when the utility or project specification accepts the selected zinc-coated steel strand. The line design must also verify lightning shielding, fault-current duty, temperature rise, earthing, mechanical loading, corrosion exposure and fittings. If an ASTM ground-wire standard is specified, confirm whether ASTM A363 or another project requirement applies.

No. This product is not presented as an energised phase conductor. In a ground-wire role it is an earthed protective wire; in guy, messenger or span-wire roles it is a mechanical member. Specify a current-carrying conductor product when normal load current must be transmitted.

Only after a compatibility check. Hardware must match the finished diameter, wire count, strength rating, coating surface, termination method and required holding capacity of the selected strand.

State the intended ground-wire or support duty, standard and edition, construction, strength grade, coating class, quantity, unit length, packing and fittings. For ground-wire duty, also provide fault-current duration, lightning or shielding criteria, span and tension data, earthing requirements, environment and the required inspection or test plan.
