Medium-Voltage Covered Conductor

Product Overview

These products are unscreened covered overhead conductors rather than touch-safe fully insulated cables. Their polymeric covering can temporarily withstand phase-to-earth voltage and helps protect against accidental contact with another covered conductor or an earthed object, but the line still requires the specified clearances, insulators, fittings and operating procedures.

Different variants use different metallic conductors and electrical interfaces. AL designs use an aluminium conductor, ACSR designs add galvanised steel reinforcement, and CX variants include a semiconductive conductor screen that is not present in the corresponding X design. Longitudinal water tightness is an optional construction feature where specified. Voltage, complete variant designation, conductor size, layer system and route requirements must therefore be kept together when selecting technical values and accessories.

Key Features

  • AL core variants:AL variants use a stranded all-aluminium core, providing the electrical conductor and a comparatively light mechanical option for routes designed without steel reinforcement.
  • ACSR core variants:ACSR variants add galvanised steel beneath the aluminium strands, increasing tensile capability for spans and loads that require a reinforced metallic core under the covering.
  • X and CX layer systems:CX designs include a semiconductive conductor screen to control the electrical interface, whereas X designs retain the product construction without that screen; each requires its own dimensional data.
  • Longitudinal water-blocking option:Optional longitudinal water blocking limits moisture movement along the stranded core when specified, adding a defined construction detail that should remain linked to its test requirement and variant code.

Product Applications

  • Overhead distribution above 1 kV and up to 35kV where the utility specifies conductors conforming to BS EN 50397
  • Vegetation-exposed or compact corridors designed with covered-conductor clearances, insulators and accessories
  • New lines and replacement sections requiring a documented AL or ACSR core, X or CX layer system and optional water blocking

Technical Specifications

Technical data is grouped by voltage class and product designation. Separate tables cover 15 kV, 25 kV and 35 kV covered conductors and 22 kV or 35 kV AL-X, AL-CX, ACSR-X and ACSR-CX variants.

From Production to Delivery

From raw material preparation to final shipmen, every stage is caretuly controled to ensure consistent conductor quality, reliable pertormance, and sae delivery. Our roduction,
inspection, packaging, and logistics processes are managed in accordance with applicable standards and project requirements.

cable production line with finished cable being wound onto a reel

Production

The aluminium or ACSR core is stranded, longitudinal water-blocking material is introduced where specified, a semiconductive layer is applied for CX designs, and the required polymeric covering is extruded.

Cable and conductor quality inspection and testing

Inspection

Inspection verifies core construction, conductor screen and covering dimensions, water-blocking option, finished diameter and the electrical or mechanical tests required by BS EN 50397 and the project schedule.

Packaged cable drums stored in the factory warehouse

Packaging

Reel diameter and delivery length are selected to protect the covered conductor’s bend limits, and the surface is shielded from abrasion, crushing and contamination during storage and transport.

Wooden cable drums secured inside a shipping container

Shipping

Labels show voltage class, AL or ACSR core, X or CX designation, water-blocking option, size, length and manufacturing batch, supporting accurate receiving and accessory allocation on site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a BS EN 50397 covered conductor touch-safe?

It is an unscreened covered overhead conductor and should be treated as energised equipment, not as a touch-proof cable. We state the product category and full variant in our quotation so your engineering and safety teams can apply the required clearances, insulators and working procedures.

AL provides an all-aluminium core, while ACSR adds steel reinforcement. Send us your conductor size, span, tensile load, sag requirement and corrosion environment; we can compare the relevant technical data and quote the core construction selected by your line designer.

CX includes a semiconductive conductor screen beneath the covering, while X does not. We will keep the complete suffix in the quotation and provide the corresponding dimensions so your team can select fittings for the actual layer system.

Yes, where it forms part of the project or utility specification. Please state the required material or test reference. We can identify the water-blocked option in the product description and documentation scope so it remains traceable from the quotation to the relevant product construction.

Finished diameter, layer system, core type and mechanical load can change between variants. If you provide the complete designation and pole arrangement, we can include accessory options corresponding to that construction for your engineering review, instead of offering one generic hardware set for both voltages.

Please provide system voltage, standard edition, AL or ACSR core, X or CX design, conductor size and stranding, water-blocking requirement, route environment, quantity, reel lengths, accessories and test documents. We can structure the offer around the complete variant and identify any missing project detail.
