ACSS and ACSS/TW Aluminium Conductor Steel Supported
ACSS conductor uses fully annealed aluminium strands around a steel supporting core. After installation, the core is designed to carry the conductor’s mechanical load while the aluminium provides the principal current path, enabling a different high-temperature and sag response from conventional ACSR. Round-wire and shaped-wire ACSS constructions require separate data and fittings.

Product Overview
The defining difference between ACSS and ACSR is not simply a higher temperature rating. ACSS uses annealed aluminium with low mechanical contribution in the installed conductor, allowing the steel core to govern tensile load and much of the final sag behaviour. The core material, coating, strength and installation tension therefore become central design inputs.
ACSS/TW adds trapezoidal aluminium strands to the same steel-supported concept. It may reduce outside diameter for a given aluminium area or increase aluminium area within a diameter envelope, depending on the approved construction. Thermal rating, clearances, creep, fittings and stringing procedures must be calculated for the exact variant.

The final design of a shaped wire compact conductor is contingent upon several factors such as: layer diameter, wire width and wire thickness. The actual configuration of a given size may vary between manufacturers. This may result in a slight variation in the number of wires, number of layers and dimensions of individual wires from that shown in the chart.

From raw material preparation to final shipmen, every stage is caretuly controled to ensure consistent conductor quality, reliable pertormance,and sae delivery. Our roduction,
inspection, packaging, and logistics processes are managed in accordance with applicable standards and project requirements.
Production
Annealed aluminium wires are stranded around the approved steel support; ACSS/TW additionally controls trapezoidal-wire forming and compact assembly.
Inspection
Inspection distinguishes aluminium temper, core type and strength, strand seating and the dimensions assigned to the selected ACSS construction.
Packaging
Drum diameter, winding and handling must protect the soft aluminium surface and prevent core or shaped-wire disturbance.
Shipping
Shipping instructions should accompany the exact conductor so unloading, storage and stringing teams apply the approved ACSS procedure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does ACSS use annealed aluminium instead of hard-drawn aluminium?
Annealed aluminium is used so the outer layers act principally as the current-carrying section while the selected steel core supports the installed mechanical load. This is fundamental to ACSS thermal and sag behaviour.
Does ACSS always operate at the same maximum temperature?
No. Allowable continuous and emergency temperatures depend on the approved conductor design, core, grease if used, fittings, joints, line clearances and the utility’s operating criteria.
When should ACSS/TW be evaluated instead of round-wire ACSS?
Evaluate ACSS/TW when outside diameter or aluminium area within a diameter limit is important. The compact geometry changes the conductor profile, mass and fitting requirements and needs its own table.
Can ACSS use standard ACSR compression fittings?
Do not assume so. Dead-ends, joints, clamps and dies must suit the ACSS load path, aluminium condition, core material, operating temperature, diameter and installation procedure.
What data is required for an ACSS uprating study?
Provide existing conductor and hardware data, spans, tensions, clearances, structures, weather assumptions, target current, normal and emergency temperatures, core option and installation constraints.
Which tests are important before accepting an ACSS system?
The project specification should address conductor properties and the complete system, including core and strand tests, resistance, rated strength, creep or sag data where required, connector qualification and installation trials.
