CCT Covered Conductor

CCT covered conductor to AS/NZS 3675 is available for 6.35/11 kV, 12.7/22 kV and 19/33 kV overhead networks. Product groups include 6201 and 1120 aluminium-alloy conductors with voltage-specific polymeric coverings; the 1120 construction is available with longitudinal water blocking, and applicable designs use XLPE or an XLPE/HDPE layer system. CCT is used on covered overhead lines, including spacer cable and insulated unscreened conductor arrangements.

Product Overview

CCT is an unscreened medium-voltage covered conductor rather than a conventional screened power cable. Its covering and mechanical design allow it to operate within an engineered overhead system and can provide improved performance in vegetation-exposed or polluted environments. Any vegetation contact remains dependent on abrasion, wind, conductor temperature, line clearances and maintenance conditions.

The 6201 and 1120 alloy groups have different electrical and mechanical properties and should not be treated as interchangeable. Longitudinal water blocking is identified for the 1120 construction, while covering thickness and finished dimensions vary with voltage and product design. Selection should therefore state the working voltage, alloy group, conductor size, covering system, water-blocking requirement, route environment and whether the conductor will be used on a conventional covered line, spacer cable or IUC system.

  • Water-blocked 1120 construction:Longitudinal water blocking is available with the 1120 aluminium-alloy construction to help limit moisture movement along the stranded conductor under the specified test conditions.
  • 6201 and 1120 alloy groups:Separate 6201 and 1120 alloy groups provide different conductor properties, giving the line designer technical specification choices for mechanical and electrical requirements without merging the two materials.
  • XLPE and XLPE/HDPE coverings:XLPE and XLPE/HDPE covering options are linked to the stated voltage and dimensions, providing the surface construction required for the selected CCT environment and installation system.
  • Covered-line, spacer and IUC arrangements:The conductor can operate within conventional covered lines, spacer cable or IUC arrangements when matched fittings and clearances are used, allowing one product family to support several overhead concepts.

Production

The specified 6201 or 1120 aluminium-alloy wires are stranded with longitudinal water-blocking material, after which the scheduled XLPE or XLPE/HDPE covering system is applied to the required dimensions.

Cable and conductor quality inspection and testing

Inspection

Inspection checks alloy and stranding, conductor resistance, water-blocking arrangement, covering thickness and surface, finished diameter and the mechanical or electrical tests required by AS/NZS 3675 and the purchase schedule.

Reels protect the covering from abrasion and observe the bend and handling limits needed for conventional or spacer-system installation, with delivery lengths planned around the customer’s stringing sections.

Is CCT suitable for a route with frequent vegetation exposure?

CCT is designed for covered-conductor applications where vegetation contact may occur, but contact duration, abrasion, wind and conductor temperature still matter. Share the route conditions and utility specification; we can quote the relevant construction while your project plan retains clearances, inspection and vegetation management.
