Covered Line Wire for Overhead Distribution

Covered line wire is a single overhead conductor with a weather-resistant polymeric covering for insulator-supported distribution. Available metallic conductors include solid 1350-H19 aluminium, stranded AAC, AAAC and ACSR, with PE, HDPE or XLPE covering according to the specified design. It is used on overhead distribution routes, crossings and replacement sections where a covered conductor is required, but it remains an energised line conductor rather than a touch-safe cable.

Product Overview

The metallic conductor and polymeric covering must be selected as one construction. Solid aluminium and AAC provide aluminium-only options, AAAC uses aluminium alloy for a different mechanical balance, and ACSR adds steel reinforcement for higher tensile duty. Covering material and thickness affect finished diameter, surface behaviour and the ties, clamps or connectors used with the conductor.

Covered line wire is normally installed as an individual conductor on insulators. It is not an aerial bundled cable, and its covering does not remove the need for clearances, insulation coordination or safe working procedures. Because the merged product range includes designs governed by different ASTM, ICEA and utility requirements, buyers should specify conductor form, size, covering material, voltage, route conditions and existing line hardware together.

Production

The metallic conductor is formed to the selected design. Solid aluminium uses the specified 1350-H19 wire, while AAC, AAAC and ACSR use their corresponding stranded constructions before the required PE, HDPE or XLPE covering is applied.

Cable and conductor quality inspection and testing

Inspection

Inspection checks core material and stranding, conductor resistance where specified, covering material, thickness and surface, overall diameter and the electrical or mechanical tests stated in the purchase schedule.

Reels are selected to respect the covered conductor’s bend and handling limits, while end protection and suitable lagging reduce abrasion, crushing and contamination before the line is strung.

Drum labels identify conductor family, nominal size, covering material and thickness, manufacturing standard, length and production lot, allowing the customer to separate similar-looking variants during receiving and installation.

Is covered line wire safe to touch when it is energised?

It should be treated as an energised overhead conductor, not as a touch-safe insulated cable. We describe the product as covered line wire in our offer and state the relevant construction, helping your safety and engineering teams retain the required clearances, insulators and working procedures.

Covered line wire is normally one conductor installed on insulators; ABC combines several insulated cores in a bundled support system. If you share the network drawing and voltage, we can direct the enquiry to the correct product family and avoid applying ABC accessories or assumptions to a single covered conductor.

Provide span, tensile load, sag limits, conductor size, corrosion environment and existing hardware. We can compare the available conductor groups and explain how each core changes mass, strength and fittings, giving your engineer a clearer basis for choosing the conductor beneath the specified covering.

No. They are separate available constructions and may differ in covering thickness, finished diameter and specified operating basis. The material required by the governing utility specification should be used. We will state the selected polymer, thickness and finished dimensions in the offer so that fittings and handling requirements can be checked against the same construction.

Some fittings may need a covered-conductor design because the polymer changes diameter, surface pressure and the connection interface.
