National Grid Substation Modernization Project in Kenya

Country / Year

Kenya / 2018

Project Background

To strengthen the national transmission network and improve long-term grid stability, the utility company implemented a modernization program for several aging substations. The project focused on replacing outdated electrical infrastructure while maintaining continuous power supply to surrounding communities and industrial users.

Customer Requirements

The customer required durable cable systems with excellent electrical performance, flame-retardant characteristics, and long service life. Product quality, technical compliance, and reliable delivery were essential to minimize maintenance requirements after commissioning.

Product Scope

Medium-voltage power cables, control cables, instrumentation cables, grounding cables, cable termination accessories, and auxiliary connection materials.

Technical Standards

IEC 60502, IEC 60228, IEC 60332, IEC 60754, BS EN standards, and utility engineering specifications.

Supply Challenge

Because the existing substations remained in operation during construction, material deliveries had to follow carefully planned installation windows. Any delay could affect the overall modernization schedule and increase outage risks.

Solution

Production was organized according to the contractor’s phased installation plan. Technical documents were reviewed before manufacturing, while each shipment included complete inspection reports and identification markings to simplify warehouse management and site installation.

Delivery Result

The modernization project was completed successfully with stable material supply throughout the construction period. The upgraded substations improved operational reliability, increased equipment safety, and enhanced the overall performance of the regional transmission network.
