220kV Substation Expansion Project in Saudi Arabia

Country / Year

Saudi Arabia / 2024

Project Background

As electricity demand continued to grow across industrial and residential developments, the regional utility initiated the expansion of an existing 220kV substation to increase transmission capacity and improve grid reliability. The project included the installation of new transformer bays, GIS equipment, protection and control systems, underground cable connections, and associated civil infrastructure.

Customer Requirements

The EPC contractor required a reliable cable supplier capable of providing multiple cable categories under one project, ensuring consistent quality, complete technical documentation, and strict compliance with project specifications. The project schedule required phased deliveries synchronized with civil works and electrical installation activities.

Product Scope

Medium-voltage power cables, low-voltage power cables, control cables, instrumentation cables, grounding conductors, cable accessories, and related substation connection materials.

Technical Standards

IEC 60502, IEC 60228, IEC 60332, IEC 60754, IEC 61034, BS EN standards, and utility technical specifications.

Supply Challenge

The project involved multiple construction packages with different installation schedules. Products needed to be delivered in various cable lengths and configurations while maintaining complete traceability, factory testing records, and documentation consistency. High ambient temperatures also required cables suitable for demanding operating conditions.

Solution

A dedicated project management team coordinated production planning, quality inspection, documentation, and logistics according to the EPC contractor’s construction schedule. Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) reports, routine test certificates, packing lists, and cable drum schedules were prepared before every shipment, ensuring smooth site acceptance and installation.

Delivery Result

The project materials were delivered on schedule and successfully supported the substation expansion. The coordinated supply process minimized installation delays, improved construction efficiency, and contributed to the reliable commissioning of the upgraded substation.
